Hi everyone! I’m Stella, a dyslexic who thankfully—and with much help—learned to read and eventually transformed into a sci-fi author. My novels gravitate towards character driven space operas with themes of crime, justice…and loads of found family.
I have always loved fish out of water stories, and taking a group of characters who gradually become closely knit despite their personalities flaring against each other. I love Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Firefly, Star Wars, Doctor Who…that last especially because of the way it’s crafted to be more enjoyable when we’re re-watching it than it was during the first time through. That’s had an impact on what I focus on in my own storytelling.
My biggest hobby is collecting hobbies…reading, painting, knitting, soap making, obsessing over history and other civilizations….etc. A nasty bought of chronic illness had a way of settling my focus on writing, since it provides a creative outlet, and can still be done even on the worst days where I’m devoted to my porcupine impersonation and staying curled in a ball.
My reading habits are erratic, genre-hopping back and forth between sci-fi, mystery, romance, thrillers, manga, and non-fiction. Part of the reason why I settled on writing sci-fi—besides being too introverted to figure out how to write a meet cute for romance—is that it provides the freedom to draw on history and other cultures in world building, and yet, because a good portion of what makes the genre is tied up in the setting. I could also weave together different kinds of plots, which keeps things interesting, and me from going bat shit crazy.
